3-car accident in Negaunee

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee Police Department handled a three-car personal injury crash shortly before 3 p.m. Friday in the construction zone on U.S. 41 just east of Heritage Drive in the westbound lanes.

An investigation revealed that a westbound white Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck driven by Randy Owens, 17, of Baraga, failed to observe that traffic was slowing and stopping in front of him. Police said Owens crashed into the rear end of a Toyota Highlander driven by Paul Midthun, 62, of Negaunee Township.

Owens’ vehicle then traveled off the right side of the highway. Midthun had been stopped by observed Owens’ vehicle approaching rapidly from the rear and tried to turn left off the highway. The crash sent the Midthun vehicle spinning forward where it crashed into another stopped vehicle, a red Ram pickup truck driven by Tari Wainio, 51, of Negaunee.

The occupants of the Toyota Highlander were treated at the scene. All three vehicles were towed from the scene by Antilla’s Towing.

Owens was found to be at fault in the accident and cited for careless driving.

Assisting at the scene were the Michigan State Police, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, the Negaunee Fire Department and UP Health System-Bell.
