MARQUETTE — Her bright, shy smile can illuminate a room. She speaks of the dream she had of being in the Olympics with the awe a 5-year-old. She dedicated 10 years of her life to a sport almost completely unheard of in the United States when it first broke into Olympic competition in the early 1970’s. Mary Phyl Dwight’s dream came true. The athletic 35-year-old, now the Sports Competition Coordinator of the Great Lakes State Games, was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team in Team Handball. Her squad, the first U.S. women’s team in the sport to ever qualify and compete in an Olympics, fell short of the bronze medal with a fourth-place finish in Los Angeles.
