SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE — People living near Sawyer Air Force Base may notice an unusual sound for about a month as the base closes for $1.1 million in repairs: quiet. The project, nicknamed “Busy Shovel,” is to be done by Aug. 16. About 5,000 feet of asphalt runway will be repaired, and 36 15-by-25-foot slabs of concrete will be removed and replaced. The asphalt on the runway has begun to show signs of deterioration because of the extreme cold temperatures, urea used on the runway for deicing during the winter, and wear and tear from regular use, according to Capt. Dave Blakeman , wing project officer for the runway repairs.
