MARQUETTE — Anglers who enjoy walk-in brook trout fishing at Rocking Chair Lakes may be interested in attending a public hearing Thursday. The hearing is being held on a proposal to designate the lakes in rugged north-central Marquette County as a state natural area. A decision on whether to continue stocking the three small lakes with brook trout hasn’t been made. “The Michigan Wilderness and Natural Areas Act doesn’t prohibit the stocking of fish or fishing, so it will be a management decision,” said Cathy Sleight, resource specialist for the Land and Water Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR will conduct the hearing at 7 p.m. at the Don H. Bottum Center at Northern Michigan University. Under the state wilderness act, which is separate from the federal act yet has much the same effect, a natural area is closed to removal of trees and vegetation, exploration or extraction of minerals, commercial development or road construction.

MARQUETTE — A Marquette man waived preliminary examination when he appeared in municipal court yesterday on a charge of illegal furnishing of drugs to inmates of the Marquette State Prison. He is the third man to be arraigned in court this month on the same charge. A prison guard at the time of the alleged offense, he is charged with bringing into the prison several thousand tablets of amphetamine, an illegal drug, which he gave away or sold to prisoners.

He has been employed at the prison since Jan. 13, 1953.
