Beacon House hosting big benefit sale Saturday

MARQUETTE- The Beacon House is hosting a Sidewalk Sale in a Parking Lot Saturday as a way to fundraiser for the organization.

The benefit will be at the Beacon House’s Third Street location from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items as big as armoires and as small as teddy bears will be available for purchase. According to Mary Tavernini Dowling, chief executive officer for Hospitality House of the Upper Peninsula, the sidewalk sale started as something small and snowballed into something bigger.

“Hospitality Gifts had some inventory from the shop that we thought would be great to offer for donations, and then expanded it to include an array of items from the Beacon House storage room,” she said. “Our board of directors got involved and began offering to bring items for the sale, which led us to broadcasting an ‘ask’ to area businesses.

“Imagine our delight when Christine Pesola from the Landmark Inn invited us to select furniture from the hotel’s warehouse. Now we will have a poster bed, chandeliers, wall sconces, armoires, bistro tables and chairs in the sale.”

New items offered in the sale include a variety of gifts and accessories from Hospitality Gifts at Marquette General Hospital, miscellaneous furniture and fixtures as well as donated furniture and appliances from area businesses.

Shoppers are asked to make a donation for some of the smaller items, and larger items will be priced accordingly. All proceeds will benefit Beacon House, the Beacon House Hospitality Rooms at MGH, the Wig Salon and other services for medical patients and families provided by the Hospitality House of the U.P.

Area businesses making donations to the sale include Hospitality Gifts, The Landmark Inn, Schwalbach Kitchens, Shunk Furniture, Art Van Furniture, Holiday Inn, Walmart, Vollwerths, Econo Foods, Super One Foods, Donckers and Griffin Beverage.
