Area prepares to celebrate Fourth of July

MARQUETTE — A number of Fourth of July celebrations are planned in the central Upper Peninsula.

Baraga County

Lumberjack Days

Celebrations will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the Firecracker Bootcamp; the event will be hosted in the Beer Garden at Cue Master Bar & Grill in Baraga. Attendees are asked to bring a mat or towel, appropriate shoes and any red, white and blue clothing. Drawings for prizes will take place at the end of the bootcamp.

Next up, Baraga County will host a cribbage tournament, registration begins at 1:30 p.m. at American Legion Post #444 in Baraga.

At 6:30 p.m. the gates will officially open for the Queen Coronation and Street Dance. Royalty events will start with the introduction of the 2022 Grand Marshal – Scott Nicklas; Prince & Princess – Ayden Mackey & Maddison LaPlante; Military Escort – Jerry Mayo; and queen candidates. After all of the royalty have arrived the queen coronation will begin.

Lumberjack Days will include the Community Street Dance from 8:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. with music by Double Trouble DJs. All royalty events, as well as the street dance, will take place along Superior Avenue in front of Wilkinson’s.

Sunday’s events will start at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, provided by the Baraga Lions Club, the event will be hosted at Baraga Area Schools before ending at noon. The flag raising ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. then Baraga will host the children’s parade. The parade will begin at noon and assemble at American Legion Post #444 where the flag raising will also take place.

Immediately after the children’s parade, there will be kids games at the corner of Girard Street and Superior Avenue. The main parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the theme “Children’s Books.” Line up for the parade begins at 2 p.m. and float judging will start at 2:30 p.m. at the Baraga Armory.

Next up will be live music from the Supersuits hosted at American Legion Post #444 from 4-9 p.m. There will be a bean bag tournament from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Registration for the tournament is open from 2-4 p.m. in front of American Legion Post #444.

At 7:30 p.m. the raffle winners will be announced and at dusk the fireworks display will begin over Keweenaw Bay. In the case of a rain delay, fireworks will be held on the Fourth of July.

Big Bay

Bay Cliff Health Camp will be holding a parade at 3 p.m. featuring its campers marching through the streets of Big Bay.

Grand Marais

Grand Marais will be starting its Fourth of July celebrations on Monday with an Independence Day parade themed “United We Stand” at 1 p.m.

Line-up for the parade starts at noon, meeting at the community center on Brawl Street. The Historical Society Raffle, Silent Auction and Methodist Church Pie Sale will be held from noon-3 p.m. Grand Marais will host water barrel fights on Main Street at 2 p.m. and kids games will start at 3 p.m. on the Community Center ball field. The Grand Marais street dance will go from 7-11 p.m. with DJ Kd Nyman before the fireworks display begins over the bay at dusk.

Ishpeming

The celebration in Ishpeming starts on Saturday with the Firecracker 5K and 1 mile walk at the Al Quaal Recreation Area. Next up at 9:45 a.m. will be the Daryl Champion Kids Parade meeting at the Mather Inn parking lot before traveling down Main Street.

Ishpeming’s Fourth of July Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday along Empire Street. From noon until dusk the city is inviting people to the Community Picnic which will include, food vendors, games and music. Kids games will be hosted in the pavilion at Al Quaal from 2-7 p.m. The night will end with a bang at 10:30 p.m. with Ishpeming’s fireworks show.

Manistique

Fourth of July celebrations will begin Friday, kicking off with a Kiddie Parade. The line-up will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the post office with the Parade beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday’s celebrations will begin at 12:30 p.m. with Manistique’s annual parade, this year’s theme will be “Rock and Roll.”

Line-up for the parade is 11:30 a.m. There will also be vendors for food, art and crafts as well as live music with Backroads 906 from 3-6 p.m. Manistique’s fireworks will start at dusk on Sunday.

Marquette Marquette’s festivities will begin with The Exchange Club’s Food Fest from 6-10 p.m. on Saturday in Mattson Lower Harbor Park. Food Fest will continue to run from noon-10 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. Visitors are invited to come enjoy the food as well as the music that will be playing throughout the event.

At 11 a.m. Monday, Washington Street from McClellan Avenue to Third Street and Third Street from Washington Street to Baraga Avenue will be closed to through traffic for the parade.

Third and Washington streets will reopen as soon as the parade is completed.

Starting at 10 a.m. Monday for parade staging, McClellan Avenue from Baraga Avenue to Ridge Street Street and areas on Baraga Avenue east and west of McClellan Avenue along the east and west of Third Street will be closed. These areas will open to traffic as soon as the parade is completed.

The Kiwanis Fourth of July Parade will start at 2 p.m. on Monday. Line-up will begin at 1 p.m. on West Washington Street and McClellan Avenue. The parade will then turn onto Third Street and end on Baraga Avenue.

This year’s parade themes are “The first 4th of July Parade in Marquette” as well as “Together- A New Beginning”

Last but not least, Marquette’s fireworks display will take place at dusk on Monday with a rain-delay date set for Tuesday.

Michigamme Celebrating 150 years, Michigamme will kick off its celebration at 5 p.m. Friday when the Cook Shack opens up. Michigamme will then host a bonfire at 6 p.m. at Township Park. At 6:30 p.m. the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Cultural Committee Dance takes place. Next, at 10 p.m. will be the Canoe Parade followed by a Lantern Release at 10:30 p.m.

Saturday’s events will start with a Cemetery Historical walk at 1 p.m. and meeting at the Veterans Memorial. At 5 p.m., the dinner portion of the dinner and dance event will commence at the Community Center Gym with dancing going from 6:30-10 p.m. each dinner ticket will cost $10 and music will be provided by Richie Yurkovich & Polkarioty.

Sunday’s events will start with an all-denominational service at 10 a.m. hosted at the Township Park Pavilion. Starting at noon and ending at 3 p.m. Michigamme’s car show will start alongside the New Breed Band and a concession stand. Michigamme will also be hosting a beard contest at 1 p.m.

The Anatomy of a Murder Ride to Big Bay will be leaving at 3:30 p.m. Live music will play from 4:30-6:30 p.m. by the Band Stetson, and the Cook Shack will open at 6 p.m. in Township Park. At 7 p.m. the Lake Michigan Property Owners Boat Parade will begin. Michigamme will then host a dance at the pavilion from 8 p.m.-midnight with music by Black Pearl.

Michigamme’s fireworks display begins at dusk Sunday.

On Monday, Michigamme will celebrate Independence Day with a parade on Main Street starting at 11 a.m. Concessions will open at that time in Township Park.

From 1-4 p.m. Michigamme will be hosting kids activities before the historical presentations and dessert social starts in the Community Center Gym at 5 p.m.

The celebration will end with a cribbage tournament at 7 p.m. in the Community Center Dining Room.

Trenary

Trenary’s Independence Day parade will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
