Police investigate social media posts about schools

ISHPEMING — NICE Community Schools officials and local police are investigating a social media post that has caused concern.

In a Thursday email to the school district community, Superintendent Bryan DeAugustine said, “We received information about some ridiculous ranting on a social media site from an anonymous poster who uses aspenwestwood as his/her profile name and an image of our Patriot logo.”

He said the post is a general one about violence, including shooting and killing people as a way to get a movie made.

“It came to our attention because of the aspenwestwood user name and Patriot logo,” DeAugustine wrote. “The police are involved and investigating, including being here in person.”

In an email, DeAugustine said Ishpeming Township Police and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office are involved in the investigation.

DeAugustine said, “We are staying open for learning in person and we are safe.”

Ishpeming Township Police Chief Mike Kohler confirmed that police are looking into the matter, which stemmed from an Instagram post that he called “suspicious in nature.”

In the letter, DeAugustine made reference to a downstate shooting at Oxford High School. According to a Thursday Associated Press story, 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley will pursue an insanity defense. He is charged as an adult with murder and other crimes for the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School in which four students were killed.

“I know tragedy at Oxford High School has many very nervous,” DeAugustine wrote. “The difference between us and that situation is that we take action immediately and involve our local police force in real time. Our officers are responsive, efficient and protective. With their help, we will keep our students and staff safe.”
