Career opportunities: Journal to host job fair

MARQUETTE — Are you in need of a job or are considering a career change? The Mining Journal is ready to assist.

Northern Michigan’s largest newspaper will host a job fair Tuesday at the Holiday Inn, located at 1951 U.S. 41 West in Marquette. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the hotel’s Ridge Room with more than a dozen businesses on hand that are in search of aspiring candidates.

“With the number of people that are looking for employees right now, we decided that this would be a good event to have,” Journal Publisher Ann Troutman said. “I’ve done these before and they’ve been very successful. So what we’re going to do is, we’ve got businesses coming to the Holiday Inn where they’ll be taking resumes and interviewing people right on the spot. There’s going to be a separate room for that, so they can take them right into the other room and interview them, and hopefully they can match people up with employers and get them jobs.”

Troutman said many types of employers will be on hand.

“We have all sorts of different types of employers coming from the Department of Corrections to health care businesses,” she said. “We have manufacturers that are going to be there. It’s a real mixed group and there’s something for everybody. That’s our goal.”

Eighteen businesses are currently slated to be at the job fair, including the following:

≤ Adult Learning Systems-U.P.

≤ UP Health System

≤ Bay Human Services

≤ Marquette County Medical Care Facility

≤ Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice

≤ Helen Newberry Joy Hospital

≤ Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital

≤ Army National Guard

≤ Michigan Department of Corrections

≤ Ojibwa Casino

≤ Hiawatha Communications Inc. and Jamadots

≤ Dickinson County Healthcare System

≤ Laser North Inc.

≤ MarqTran

≤ Timber Products Company

≤ Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice

≤ Associated Constructors

≤ Kentucky Fried Chicken

The Holiday Inn, Ramada Inn and Hampton Inn are also hiring for all positions. Applications will be available at the event.

Asked why job fairs are so critical right now, Troutman said it’s a way to help local businesses get back on their feet, many of which are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“So many of the employers in the area are missing people right now that they can’t even operate their business,” she said. “They’re short-handed, they’re short-staffed, and they’re really looking for people to fill those positions.”

Parking and admission are free.

The Journal encourages job seekers who are interested in attending to bring resumes and dress appropriately.
