MSP: Woman shot by police in critical condition

HUBBELL — A woman shot by police during an incident in Hubbell Monday night remained in critical condition at a Green Bay hospital as of noon Tuesday, a Michigan State Police spokesperson said Wednesday.

The Michigan State Police and Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shots fired at a house in Hubbell about 9:15 p.m. Monday, the MSP said. Officers found a 28-year-old woman outside believed to be armed.

Video taken by a bystander and posted online showed the woman yelling “Shoot me!” as police ordered her to drop a gun. She was shot as she turned to re-enter the house. An MSP release stated police had feared for the safety of an elderly woman in the house.

Officers performed first aid until EMS could arrive on scene, the MSP said. The woman was airlifted to a hospital in Green Bay.

MSP Public Information Officer Lt. Mark Giannunzio, public information officer for the Eighth District, could not confirm the accuracy of a name being circulated for the shooting victim Tuesday, citing MSP policy. Green Bay hospitals contacted Tuesday afternoon did not list a patient with that last name.

Michigan State Police detectives are conducting a full investigation into the shooting, the MSP said. Investigations are done by a different district; this one is being performed by the Investigative Response Team from the Seventh District, which covers the northern Lower Peninsula. Under department protocol, the troopers involved were placed on administrative leave until the investigation is done.
