Suspicious death in Ishpeming under investigation

ISHPEMING — The body of a woman found in a lake next to Excelsior Street in Ishpeming on Friday is being investigated as a suspicious death, officials say.

According to an Ishpeming Police Department press release, the body was found under the ice approximately six feet from shore at around 8 p.m. Friday.

The IPD is also seeking information in a missing person’s investigation connected with the case, officials say.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Friday, Ishpeming resident Lacie Borchert was reported as missing from her home, the release states.

She was last seen at her residence at 3 a.m. Friday.

The vehicle Borchert was known to drive was found in a ditch off Excelsior Street at around 5:45 p.m. Friday, police said.

“Officers went back to the scene where the vehicle was found and conducted a search for Lacie,” the release states, “which is when they located the female victim under the ice in the lake.”

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab was called to assist with the investigation and the body was transported to UP Health Systems – Marquette where an autopsy will be performed.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time, IPD officials said during a phone interview.

The investigation is ongoing, and IPD is seeking information from any person who had contact with Borchert recently. Anyone with information is asked to call 906-486-4416.
