AG, MSP: ‘Insufficient evidence’ for criminal charges against St. Ignace police chief

ST. IGNACE — There is insufficient evidence to support criminal charges against St. Ignace Chief of Police Tony Brown, according to a Michigan State Police press release.

The Michigan attorney general reviewed the case, which was related to a May 28 complaint alleging that Brown committed a crime while on duty. The attorney general determined that criminal charges could not be supported, officials said in the release.

The complaint alleged that Brown had “potentially committed a crime while on duty by manipulating a complaint that negatively affected the prosecution of a case,” the release states.

Two Michigan State Police detectives investigated the complaint. The investigation included collection and analysis of potential digital evidence from computers. Findings were submitted to the Mackinac County Prosecutor for review in June. The Mackinac County Prosecutor referred the case to the attorney general’s office.
