Marquette County Treasurer Ann Giroux resigns

Anne Giroux

MARQUETTE — Marquette County Treasurer Anne Giroux resigned from her position, effective Oct. 31, to take on the position of finance manager for the county.

Giroux has served as treasurer since July 2007.

In her role as treasurer, Giroux is responsible for the coordination and preparation of the annual budget, grant administration and financial reporting for the county, according to the county website. As she takes on her new position currently held by Susan Vercoe, who is retiring, Giroux will handle duties such as payroll, financial statements and more, she said.

“Even though it’s still here working for Marquette County, I think it’s a totally different perspective and definitely a different set of challenges,” Giroux said. “The county is going to have some significant challenges in the coming years funding post-retirement benefits and things like that; as most municipalities struggle with that, the county is as well. It’s really going to be a challenge and I’m looking forward to looking at things a bit more strategically in that role.”

In her 12 years as treasurer, Giroux is most proud of the creation of the Marquette County Land Bank Authority and Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

“I’ve worked extensively with those two agencies and actually in this new role I’m hoping to continue working for those two entities, so that’s not really going to change a ton,” Giroux said. “But as far as the treasurer’s office, I’ve really enjoyed working with the public and educating people on tax collection and working with people who are facing foreclosures and trying to keep them in their homes. That’s probably the best part of the job, is working with the public and educating them.”

For those who have come to Giroux in her time as treasurer, she assures she won’t be hard to find as her new office is located in the building just next door.

“I’m just looking forward to continuing to serve the public, just in a different role,” she said.

Under Michigan law, the probate judge, prosecuting attorney and county clerk will appoint a successor to complete the rest of Giroux’s term, which goes through Dec. 31, 2020.
