MARQUETTE — Recovering from a substance use disorder can be a long and challenging journey.

To help support those in need of a safe and supportive environment while they make that journey, Great Lakes Recovery Centers Inc. is holding its 12th annual Run for Recovery Wednesday evening in Marquette to raise funds for Upper Peninsula recovery housing.

“There’s a lot of different options of events that you can participate in. There’s a 5K walk, there’s also a 5K run and a 10K run. Even if you don’t want to participate, you’re welcome to come hang out for the evening,” said GLRC marketing coordinator Tayler Tankersley. “It’s not only a fundraising event, but it’s an awareness-raising event for mental health and substance use issues that are present in our local community.”

The race will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with registration starting at 5 p.m. at 241 Wright St., Marquette. The run is open to all ages, with divisions for adults, teens and youth.

Raising funds for recovery housing is important, organizers said, as it provides “structure, support and a safe environment for those new to recovery, and allows the individual to continue to heal from the impacts of substance abuse.”

GLRC offers recovery housing in Marquette at Sue B’s Recovery Residence for Women, which provides an environment tailored to the needs of those in recovery, Tankersley said.

“If the individual is leaving residential treatment and they don’t have that safe and supportive environment to transition to, then they can live in recovery housing, which is a sober, recovery-oriented environment for them to stay in,” she said.

GLRC is also working to establish recovery housing in L’Anse, she added.

Beyond raising funds, it’s also critical to raise awareness of substance use disorders and behavioral health challenges, Tankersley said, noting she hopes the event can inspire compassionate and inclusive dialogue about the issues.

“It’s just a good way for the community to get together and support mental health services,” Tankersley said.

Organizers said the event still needs volunteers and that they should arrive by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Those who are interested in volunteering or would like more information are asked to contact Tankersley at 906-228-5879 or ttankersley@greatlakesrecovery.org.

The cost for adult registration is $30. Adults who preregister online by today can register for $25, with a shirt guaranteed in their size of choice.

Teens ages 13 to 17 can register for $15, while kids 12 and under can register for $5. Upper Peninsula Road Runners Club members can receive a $3 discount.

The Run for Recovery will also feature the Heroes Challenge with free registration for all law enforcement officials and firefighters, as well as other first responders and public safety workers who wish to participate.

Those who register for the Run for Recovery will receive a free T-shirt and water bottle with registration. Refreshments and prizes will also be offered. Online registration is available at runsignup.com/Race/MI/Marquette/GLRCRunforRecovery.

The Run for Recovery will start and finish at Great Lakes Recovery Centers Adult Residential Services, located at 241 Wright St., Marquette. Participants are advised to park at the nearby Superior Dome and look for a tent in the field near GLRC Adult Residential Services.
