Fire at Pine Ridge
Rooftop blaze forces apartment resident evacuation
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is “undetermined” and remains under investigation, Marquette City Fire Department officials said in a phone interview this morning.
A temporary shelter for all residents of the 140-apartment structure was set up at the Northern Michigan University Superior Dome, according to a Marquette County Emergency Management press release.
Displaced residents can call 211 to get more information on the shelter option.
Marquette City Fire Department Sgt. Kirk Vogler said officials from several agencies were meeting to determine how and when residents would be able to return to their apartments, which is dependent, in part, on what utilities could be made available in the building.
“They are working toward that,” Vogler said. “At this point, there is no domestic water on site. We will know more after noon today.”
A fire department press release reported that heavy smoke and flames were coming from the north half of the building’s roof around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Firefighters could be seen on the roof of the building spraying water and foam onto the blaze, which was contained roughly one hour after suppression efforts began.
The press release states about 40 firefighters assisted at the scene of the building, located at the corner of Pine and Ridge streets.
Marq-Tran buses transported dozens of residents and their pets from the scene to the Superior Dome.
The MCFD was assisted at the scene by the Marquette City Police Department, Marquette Township Fire Department, Chocolay Township Fire Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, NMU Public Safety, Semco Gas Co., UP Health System and Marquette Board of Light and Power.
