Abandoned mine building catches fire

NEGAUNEE — No injuries were reported after an abandoned mine building caught fire near the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in Negaunee on Tuesday.

Negaunee Fire Chief Ned Cory said crews were called out at 7:45 p.m. to a location near Lincoln Street in Negaunee.

Cory said crews worked for roughly 2¢ hours fighting the blaze, and were able to keep it contained to the building itself.

“It was an old abandoned CCI (Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co.) building. Somehow a fire started in the roof area,” Cory said. “It spread to the second roof line, but didn’t go any farther than that. It didn’t spread to the trees.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Cory said.

The Negaunee Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Negaunee Township Fire Department, the Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Unit 131 from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and the Negaunee Police Department, Cory said.
