NMU Sustainability Week activities noted

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University’s EcoReps, a sustainability peer-to-peer education program for NMU students, is hosting multiple activities on campus for NMU Sustainability Week, which runs today through Saturday. All events are open to the public, organizers said.

The events are as follows:

Today:

≤ Meatless Monday, all day, Northern Lights Dining

Northern Lights Dining will be serving additional vegetarian and vegan options today. As part of the initiative, all NMU students are invited to eat at Northern Lights Dining for free. An information table at Northern Lights Dining with “fast facts about meat production and consumption impacts” will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., organizers said.

“Cowspiracy” screening, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Jamrich Hall, room 1320

“Cowspiracy,” a documentary “revealing the impact of rapid animal production and consumption on our bodies and the environment,” will be shown, according to the EcoReps.

Tuesday:

≤ Write Your Reps, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jamrich Hall lobby

Attendees will be able to write a letter to their local, state or national representatives, as EcoReps will be on hand to help identify attendees’ representatives and provide all supplies, including postage.

“Awake” documentary screening, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Jamrich Hall, room 1320

The EcoReps will host a screening of the documentary “Awake, A Dream From Standing Rock,” provided by the NMU Center for Native American Studies for screening. The documentary “captures the story of Native-led defiance that forever changed the fight for clean water, our environment and the future of our planet,” according to the film’s website.

Wednesday:

≤ Clothing Swap & Fix It Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jamrich Hall middle lobby

EcoReps will be available to help mend and repair clothing and help “find new homes for the clothing you’ve ‘Marie Kondoed’ out of your life,” organizers said. “Don’t have anything to bring? No worries, come find something new to love.”

The swap is held by EcoReps in conjunction with Associated Students of NMU’s Career Closet. Clothing remaining at the end of the day will be donated to PakRatz in support of The Women’s Center and business clothes will be donated to the NMU Career Closet.

Thursday:

≤ Sustainability Week Screen Printing, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Jamrich Hall room 131

Attendees can screen print the EcoReps or Sustainability Week logo on new or old gear, as participants can bring an item, or use blank items from the clothing swap as well as blank canvas bags that will be on hand at the event.

Friday:

≤ GeoTrashing, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., NMU Academic Mall

The EcoReps will host a campus-wide clean-up in conjunction with the NMU Facilities Department to help remove litter after the spring thaw. EcoReps will provide gloves and bags to all volunteers. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided for all volunteers.

Saturday:

≤ Sustainability Week Celebration with Earth Hour, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Marquette Climbers’ Cooperative. 225 N. 4th St., Marquette

Earth Hour, a worldwide effort led by the World Wildlife Fund to “celebrate the diversity of life on earth through protecting the environment” will be celebrated at the Marquette Climbers’ Cooperative by lighting the venue with candles.Attendees are encouraged to bring their own flashlight or headlamp. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

For those who wish to win an EcoReps goodie bag, they can attend three Sustainability Week 2019 events, get their photo taken with the sign and attend Saturday’s Sustainability Week Celebration to pick up the goodie bag after verifying the three photos with the EcoRep Goodie Bag Coordinator. The Sustainability Week Celebration does not count as one of the three events required. There is a limited supply of 50 goodie bags are available.
