MARQUETTE — People calling the Shopko Pharmacy in Marquette might be in for a bit of a surprise.

Customers calling regional retailer will hear a message from Walgreens instead.

A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge for the District of Nebraska on Monday approved the $52 million sale of bankrupt retailer Shopko’s prescription files and related pharmacy assets to drugstore and grocery chains led by Walgreens Boots Alliance, CVS Health and Albertsons, according to a Forbes article.

The pharmacy at the Marquette Shopko, 1150 W. Washington St., was on the list of pharmacies whose assets were sold, with Walgreens the successful bidder.

Walgreens is located across the street at 1115 W. Washington St.

The Shopko Pharmacy in Ishpeming was not on the list. The pharmacy deferred comment on the matter to the Shopko corporate office.

Walgreens bought pharmacies at the Shopko locations in Calumet, Houghton and L’Anse.

The purchase covers both the prescription pharmaceutical industry and the pharmacy files, according to court documents.

“Patients will not need to take any action,” Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso was quoted as saying in The Daily Mining Gazette in Houghton. “They will be receiving notification in the mail when the transfer occurs.”

Caruso noted patients would have access to all Walgreens services, including nationwide prescription delivery.

Court documents indicated Walgreens also was the successful bidder for the Shopko pharmacies in Escanaba and Kingsford.

Shopko, based in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, in January announced that it, along with its subsidiaries, had filed voluntary petitions for a court-supervised financial restructuring under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

Shopko sought to facilitate the restructuring as a result of excess debt and ongoing competitive pressures. The petitions have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Nebraska.

According to The Associated Press, Shopko reported assets of less than $1 billion, and liabilities of between $1 billion and $10 billion.

The Marquette and Ishpeming stores were not on the latest list of closures.

Closures of three Michigan states previously had been announced, with the Wetmore store along East M-28 expected to close April 9. Stores in downstate Standish and Dowagiac are set to shut their doors for good on March 17 and April 8, respectively.
