NEGAUNEE — Negaunee Public Schools is dealing with the aftermath of the collapse of its bus garage on Sunday following the heavy snowfall that accompanied the weekend blizzard.

NPS Superintendent Dan Skewis said the roof on its bus garage, located along U.S. 41, collapsed, taking three walls with it at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

“The roof right now is resting on all 16 buses that are inside,” Skewis said in an email. “At this moment, there is not a safe way to remove any of the buses.

“We have had several districts reach out to us offering their buses while we sort out our situation. I am extremely grateful to these superintendents/ transportation directors.”

Skewis said that as of Monday night, the district had enough buses to transport students to school this morning.

Skewis also said he was to meet this afternoon with an engineer and the insurance adjuster. The district then can move forward with the demolition of the garage and then assess what damage has been done to the buses. “Without going all the way into the garage, it looks like all 16 are damaged to some extent,” he said.

According to the NPS Facebook page, some buses were running late this morning. It also noted in a Monday post that replacement buses were received from a number of districts, including NICE, Gladstone, Escanaba, Superior Central, Gwinn, Marquette, Baraga, Bark River-Harris and L’Anse.

“The last two days have been long and a lot of effort has went into making sure our students’ ‘school lives’ aren’t disrupted,” Skewis said. “We are blessed to be surrounded by great people. We will overcome this setback.”
