Hatchery stocks brook trout

HARVEY — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ 2018 fall fish-stocking totals have been announced.

From September through December, fisheries crews stocked nine different species for more than 1.1 million fish that weighed in at over 17 tons. These fish were stocked at 153 locations throughout Michigan. When combined with spring and summer efforts, more than 22 million fish were stocked last year.

The Marquette State Fish Hatchery in Harvey stocked roughly 31,700 fall fingerling and adult brook trout weighing a combined nearly 2,800 pounds at 54 sites.

Other stockings were:

≤ Harrietta State Fish Hatchery, located west of Cadillac, three strains of fall fingerling brown trout — about 29,000 Wild Rose weighing roughly 2,100 pounds, 80,000 Gilchrist Creek weighing about 2,500 pounds and nearly 121,000 Sturgeon River weighing nearly 3,200 pounds at 31 locations. It also stocked about 9,750 fall fingerling domestic strain Eagle Lake rainbow trout at around 620 pounds at one stocking site.

≤ Oden State Fish Hatchery near Petoskey — 160,000 fall fingerling Eagle Lake rainbow trout with a total weight of nearly 2,600 pounds at 12 sites.

≤ Platte River State Fish Hatchery, located west of Traverse City — about 86,400 fall fingerling Atlantic salmon weighing 2,600 pounds and roughly 140,300 fall fingerling coho salmon weighing nearly 8,400 pounds at two sites.

≤ Thompson State Fish Hatchery near Manistique — Around 246,300 fall fingerling steelhead, with a total weight of 2,200 pounds, at four locations.

≤ Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery, located west of Kalamazoo — two species of fall fingerlings, which were about 152,000 Michigan strain steelhead weighing 1,660 pounds at two locations and around 22,200 Great Lakes strain muskellunge weighing nearly 3,100 pounds at 22 sites.

Species stocked this fall included Atlantic salmon, channel catfish, brook trout, brown trout, coho salmon, lake sturgeon, walleye, the northern and Great Lakes strains of muskellunge, and rainbow trout — Eagle Lake and Michigan strain steelhead.

Several other fisheries management units also stocked fall fingerling walleye last year, including about 15,500 Muskegon strain weighing around 1,550 pounds and roughly 7,400 Bay de Noc strain at 555 pounds.

Two additional species of cool-water fish also were stocked in 2018: 50 adult channel catfish at 182 pounds and 585 fall fingerling lake sturgeon at nearly 21 pounds.

The Marquette State Fish Hatchery is located at 488 Cherry Creek Road. It is the primary broodstock and rearing facility for brook and lake trout for inland and Great Lakes waters. Also reared at the hatchery is splake, a hybrid between brook trout and lake trout.
