Rescuers searching for missing NMU student

ESTUPIGAN

ISHPEMING — Rescue personnel are searching for a missing Northern Michigan University student, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched to Marquette County Road 510 at the Yellow Dog River parking lot in Ishpeming Township on a report of a missing/overdue subject.

According to information obtained from roommates, the 25-year-old student, Guiancarlo B. Estupigan, had traveled to the area of the Yellow Dog River to hike and take photographs of the waterfalls on Thursday.

Estupigan failed to return from his trip, so the roommates went to the parking lot and located his Subaru Crosstrek parked there and covered in snow.

The roommates then called Central Dispatch for sheriff’s office rescue safety personnel to respond.

Since the time Estupigan had gone hiking on Thursday afternoon until safety personnel were dispatched, weather had changed and snowfall had occurred in the general Big Bay area.

The sheriff’s office is asking the public for help in locating Estupigan. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911.

Assisting at the scene were Michigan State Police K-9 along with Marquette County search and rescue volunteers.
