Crash kills woman, 78
NEGAUNEE — A 78-year-old woman died after sustaining injuries from a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 41 in Negaunee Township Thursday afternoon.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post responded to the crash near Brebner Road around 2:30 p.m. Westbound lanes on the highway near Tractor Supply Co. were reduced to one as a preliminary investigation was conducted.
Investigators determined that a 2004 Toyota Avalon driven by an 81-year-old man from Sands Township was eastbound on U.S. 41 with a 78-year-old female passenger, according to a state police press release. While attempting a left turn, the Avalon traveled into the path of a westbound 2006 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck, driven by a 57-year-old male from Champion.
The woman was killed in the crash and both drivers were transported to UP Health System-Marquette for treatment. The accident is still under investigation, police said, and names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Michigan State Police was assisted at the scene by UPHS-Marquette Emergency Medical Services, UPHS-Bell EMS, Negaunee Township Fire Department, Marquette County Road Commission, Marquette County Rescue 131 and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.
