Autopsy set for today

ISHPEMING — An autopsy will be performed this morning on the body of a female who was found in a field northwest of the Ishpeming High School football field early Friday afternoon, officials from the Ishpeming Police Department said.

Police say they will not release the name of the victim, who appeared to be between 20 – 30 years old, until she has been positively identified, noting that they will attempt to positively identify her through the use of dental records and/or fingerprints.

A subject riding a mountain bike had found the woman’s body in the field and called police at approximately 12:42 p.m. Friday.

The Ishpeming Police Department contacted the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and a forensic anthropologist from Northern Michigan University to assist on the scene. Marquette County Sheriff’s Office deputies also assisted in the investigation of the suspicious death.

Ishpeming police said they will continue the investigation into the victim’s identity and her cause of death.

Anyone with information on any suspicious activity in the northwest corner of the football field is asked to call the Ishpeming Police Department at 906-486-4416.
