AAUW holding book sale

Proceeds to go toward scholarships

MARQUETTE — Have an interest in pets? Gardening? The former Soviet Russia? It’s a good bet you’ll find a book that intrigues you at the upcoming American Association of University Women book sale.

The sale will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 120 N. Front St., Marquette.

AAUW member Renee Leow was one of several members who helped set up the sale Tuesday, with rows and rows of books marked by categories.

“This is our scholarship-earning book sale,” Leow said. “All of the money from the sale goes to local scholarships for women and girls.”

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

Leow said the AAUW in 2017 gave two scholarships to local females.

“We try to give them to students that are later in their careers,” said Leow, who explained that’s when money starts getting tight.

The financial goal for this year’s sale is whatever the group can raise, she said.

Many books have been donated for the event.

“I cannot thank the community enough for their generosity,” Leow said.

The number of books available for sale is testament to that generosity.

In fact, Leow called it “mountains” of books rather than “piles.”

With that many books to be sold, what will be done with the ones left over after the event?

“We’re hoping that we sell them,” Leow said. “Like I said this morning, they’re like cats and dogs, and hopefully they’re going to come here and adopt quite a few of our cats and dogs.”

However, she said any unsold books will be distributed throughout the community at places like the St. Vincent de Paul store and Bay Cliff Health Camp, and possibly Marquette Alternative High School and Beacon House.

“They’re not going to be chucked,” Leow said. “We want someone else to get some good use out of them.”

AAUW member Judy Warner, who has belonged to the group since 1984, had her gloves on while sorting books into various categories.

“Some people want just sports and other people want classics,” Warner said.

That’s not to say visitors couldn’t come across other books that appeal to them.

“We want them to be able to go to the area they want — and then browse,” Warner said.
