Group rescued from stranded pickup truck near Grand Marais
MARQUETTE – Four individuals were rescued early Thursday morning after getting stranded on a snowmobile trail near the Grand Marais Airport.
The group attempted to drive a pickup truck along Trail No. 443, and got stuck approximately 5 miles south of Grand Marais, according to the Alger County Sheriff’s Department.
A 911 call from the individuals – Matthew Maynard and Keith Avery, both of Grand Marais, Stephanie Maynard of Manistique and Tyler Franz of Escanaba – was received by the sheriff’s office at about 4:15 a.m. Thursday.
They reported they had made multiple attempts to build fires but failed, and that they were getting cold.
A trail groomer from the Grand Marais SnoTrails and a National Park Service ranger responded to the call and located the group. They found Stephanie Maynard to have a knee injury, and returned the group to safety.
