Joe Derocha

MARQUETTE — This Tuesday two Democratic candidates will vie for a spot on the Nov. 3 ballot for the District 2 seat on the Marquette County Board of Commissioners.

District 2 consists of Negaunee Township, Ishpeming Township, Champion Township, Michigamme Township Republic Township, Humboldt Township and Ely Township.

County commissioners are elected to a two-year term.

The Mining Journal asked candidates Sterling Schultz and Joe Derocha two questions, limiting answers to 100 words each.

Sterling Schultz currently holds a position on the Marquette County Veterans Affairs Committee and is active on the Homeless Task Force in Marquette County.

1. In your view what is the most pressing issue for Marquette County at present?

Schultz: I think there are several key issues of major importance in Marquette county. Number one at this time is the pandemic and making sure we maintain the spread of it by following common sense rules like social distancing and wearing a mask. Controlling the virus is important and vital in so many ways like trying to get back to some sort of normal way of living like getting kids back to school SAFELY. and not wearing a mask again and meeting with friends and opening up vets centers health care to visitors.

2. If elected as a Marquette County Commissioner, how do you propose to address that concern?

Schultz: Solving the pandemic problem is a hard problem to totally solve because there is so much all the experts can’t figure out about this terrible virus and rules change every day ,but that being said we have to be more stringent on educating the general public on the importance of wearing a mask such as your not wearing it so much for protecting yourself but protecting you from spreading it to others like your parents or grandparents or others you love. also more stringent on enforcement of executive orders even if you think some are not to your liking.

Joe Derocha is the incumbent Democratic candidate and the current vice-chair of the board of commissioners.

1. In your view what is the most pressing issue for Marquette County at present?

Derocha: Currently one of the most important issues is the health and safety of the Marquette County employees and residents. Maintaining of high level services to the community, along with enhanced economic development that provides quality jobs in Marquette County.

2. If elected as a Marquette County Commissioner, how do you propose to address that concern?

Derocha: If reelected I will continue to support and enhance policies to keep staff and the residence of Marquette County safe in this uncertain global crisis. I will always encourage policies that are attractive for companies (and) labor to locate economic development projects in Marquette County.
