Front Street Brass set to perform

MARQUETTE — Get into the holiday spirit with a concert performed by Front Street Brass at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room on the lower level.

Front Street Brass is a seven-person brass ensemble with David Allen on trombone and bass trombone, Brad Bender on horn, Tom Bronken on tuba, Mike Crothers on trumpet, Joe Hellberg on trumpet, Sarah Rehborg on trumpet, and Beth Wilson on horn.

They will be playing a variety of Christmas Carol arrangements that originated in various countries from around the world, spanning from the 1500s to the present.

Silent retreat to be held Sunday

MARQUETTE — Meditate Marquette is sponsoring a one-day silent retreat on Sunday at Awakenings, 118 W. Washington St., Suite 2-C.

The retreat is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring lunch for mindful eating. Chairs and some cushions are available. Bring cushions and or benches if desired. The retreat will be held in noble silence with sitting and walking meditation, mindful eating, and inspirational talks.

Personal Legacy Workshop at PWPL

MARQUETTE — From 6-8 p.m. Monday in the Dandelion Cottage Room, the Peter White Public Library will be hosting a Personal Legacy Workshop with Heather Mlsna.

With a background in writing and marketing, Mlsna is the owner/operator of Last Letters/No Regrets, a professional writing service which serves individuals seeking to express themselves on paper, but who need help getting started. The goal of her service is to help people find healing and remembrance though writing.

NAMI set to hold support group

MARQUETTE — The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette offers free, confidential peer support groups and educational meetings for individuals living with mental illness, and friends or families living with an individual with mental illness.

In case of bad weather, if Northern Michigan University cancels evening classes, the NAMI meeting will also be canceled.

MTU to host Lauren Jescovitch

HOUGHTON — Michigan State University Extension and Michigan Technological University have announced a new collaboration to enhance fisheries and aquaculture outreach and education in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center, located in Houghton, will host Dr. Lauren Jescovitch, a new Michigan Sea Grant Extension educator. Jescovitch began her new position on Oct. 28, and plans to help connect MSU and Michigan Tech resources with the communities and residents of the U.P. Jescovitch also will have an office at the Houghton County MSU Extension office in Hancock.

The GLRC provides state-of-the-art laboratories to support research on a broad array of topics, and seeks to educate future scientists, researchers, policymakers and stakeholders about the Great Lakes basin.
