Midsummer Strings set to perform

MARQUETTE — Let Midsummer Strings bring a little sunshine to November in this weeknight concert at 7 p.m. Monday in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room on the lower level.

The Finnish trio, Midsummer Strings, featuring Maija Niemi on violin and kantele, Marianne Saarivirta-Kolpack on violin and voice and Seija Kenn on cello, has been performing together for nearly 20 years brought together by their Finnish heritage. All three began playing their instruments at a young age and were classically trained, performing in various orchestras and ensembles. Currently they play with the Marquette Symphony Orchestra.

In an effort to learn more about their heritage, they have been learning some old traditional Finnish folk tunes and meeting many current Finnish folk musicians from Finland and other locations. They have dug further into their roots by researching some of the oldest tunes that were passed down by generations before they were written down. In 2005, they released a CD of traditional Finnish music.

Midsummer Strings will perform a mixture of Finnish music ranging from old to new folk tunes from different areas of Finland. They will incorporate 5-string and 10-string traditional Finnish lap-harps known as the kantele into parts of their performance along with singing in Finnish.

There is no admission charge to attend thanks to sponsorship by the Carroll Paul Memorial Trust Fund of the Peter White Public Library. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
