The Fiddle Pickers set to perform

L’ANSE — The classic country and cajun music of The Fiddle Pickers comes to the free L’Anse Lakefront Concerts, this one at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The lakefront park is at the foot of Broad Street at the lake. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy their music, the summer weather and the spectacular view.

Meadowbrook Arena is the venue in case of inclement weather.

Ice cream social held at Bailey Park

BAILEY PARK — West Shore Fishing Museum will host its annual Ice Cream Social from noon to 4 p.m. CDT Sunday.

Visitors are invited to celebrate the end of summer at an old-fashioned community picnic on a beautiful and interesting bay shore property dating back to 1893. A new feature this year is the availability of a golf cart shuttle to help people get to and from parking areas.

The event features a huge selection of delicious homemade pies, brats, hot dogs, root beer, ice cream, and root beer floats. Donations of homemade fruit pies to support the event are welcome.

Linda & Company will provide live music featuring guitar, keyboard, accordion, and drums. The combo plays a variety of music including country, blues, and older rock tunes.

The museum nature trails have been greatly improved since last year, offering adults and children a pleasant walk in the woods and along the beach.

A play area is set aside for children, with many more kids games and activities this year. Miniature pony Chocolate Chip will be on the grounds. The vintage gift shop is stocked with many newly arrived treasures. Perennial plants are available for sale, along with advice from a Master Gardener. More than 80 prizes will be raffled off starting at 3 p.m.

This popular event and the museum celebrate life on Green Bay waters and shores in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on commercial fishing, a major industry in the region. The restored Bailey home, exhibit buildings, commercial fishing boat displays, gardens, and improved nature trails provide a pleasant and relaxing step back into local history.

West Shore Fishing Museum is both a Michigan Registered Historic Site and a part of the Great Lakes Fisheries Heritage Trail. It displays five commercial fishing boats including the fully restored gill net boat Kate A. and the more modern trap net boat Mary Kay.

There is no admission or parking charge. Most of the museum and grounds are handicapped accessible. The museum operates largely on the funds raised at this yearly event and on donations and memberships. It is located off M-35 at Bailey Park, 15 miles north of Menominee or 7 miles south of Cedar River. Drive into Bailey Park and then go north on the shady lane into the museum grounds.
