Lifeguard certification available

MARQUETTE — The YMCA of Marquette County is offering lifeguarding certification Sept. 3-9.

This American Red Cross Deep Water certification will not only give the participant the opportunity for employment at the YMCA but also gives the participant the pre-requisites required for waterfront lifeguard certification.

With a lifeguarding certification employment possibilities open up in a niche market while giving oneself purpose in their work protecting the community while enjoying the water, either pool side or otherwise.

This lifeguarding certification will run from 2-9 p.m. Sept. 3-7. The YMCA is willing to work with school schedules and encourages individuals to contact the front desk or the Aquatics Director Patrick Markey for more information. Classes are open to both YMCA members and non-members.

PWPL to host immigrant program

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library invites patrons to a presentation by Martha Bloomfield entitled “Michigan Immigrants: Romanies, Hmong and Many More” at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Peter White Public Library’s Shiras Room on the upper level of the library.

In her most recent book, “Romanies in Michigan” (part of the MSU Press Discovering the Peoples of Michigan series,) Martha has collected the stories of this lesser known immigrant group through oral history interviews, stories which reveal the life experiences of a marginalized people who have been hidden, silenced, censored, and/or disrespected in communities throughout the world.

A member of the Michigan Humanities Council Arts and Humanities Touring Directory, Martha gives workshops on oral histories and marginalized people to organizations, libraries and schools.

Her earlier books include “The Sweetness of Freedom: Stories of Immigrants” (with Stephen Garr Ostrander,) “My Eyes Feel They Need to Cry: Stories from the Formerly Homeless” and “Hmong Americans in Michigan.”

Joining Bloomfield will be guest speaker Russ Magnaghi, Northern Michigan University Professor of History Emeritus. As the Acquisitions Editor of MSU Press Discovering the Peoples of Michigan series, he will discuss the development of this most successful series and its impact on Michigan Heritage.

After the presentation, there will be the opportunity for book sales and signings. There is no admission fee to attend.

Meditation class coming up

MARQUETTE — Join Jeremy Morelock for a weekly meditation class emphasizing mindfulness, loving-kindness and compassion.

The class meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays in September in the Heritage Room at the Peter White Public Library.

NMU tech support at library

MARQUETTE — Members of Northern Michigan University’s Student Cybersecurity Association will be available to help library patrons with their personal technology devices on Fridays Sept. 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Peter White Public Library’s Heritage Room on the upper level.

This drop-in opportunity is for those having trouble with apps, laptops, e-readers, tablets, phones or other digital devices. No appointment is necessary and there is no charge for this service.

Suicide prevention event set

ISHPEMING — The Out of Darkness Marquette County Community Walk is set for Sept. 7 at Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming.

Registration is at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. Included in the day will be light refreshments, a bead ceremony and a take-home project.

Proceeds benefit the Marquette County Suicide Prevention Alliance and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Dance at Rock center planned

ROCK — A dance will take place at the Rock Community-Senior Center, 3892 W. Mapleridge Road, from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 8.

Music will be by Country Express. Admission is $5 per person and there is a free-will donation lunch available.

MARQUETTE — Need help finding the ancestors in your family tree?

The Peter White Public Library continues to partner with the Marquette County Genealogical Society to help research genealogy resources at PWPL.

Those with an interest in genealogy are welcome to work individually with an experienced genealogist on Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon and again on Sept. 19, from 2-4 p.m. in the

Heritage Room of the Peter White Public Library. Bring family documents with you.

Mystery book group to meet

MARQUETTE — Once Upon A Crime, the book group for Mystery Lovers, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 in the Dandelion Cottage Room at the Peter White Public Library to discuss “In Farleigh Field” by Rhys Bowen.

It was the winner of the 2017 Agatha and Left Coast awards. World War II comes to Farleigh Place, the ancestral home of Lord Westerham and his five daughters, when a soldier with a failed parachute falls to his death on the estate.

After his uniform and possessions raise suspicions, MI5 operative and family friend Ben Cresswell is covertly tasked with determining if the man is a German spy. Part of the “They Took the Prize” theme for the year. New members are welcome.
