Arab American Day at PWPL

MARQUETTE — Interested in Arab American culture? Then come to the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room for Arab American Day on Tuesday, with two programs presented by the Arab American National Museum. The first program is a Cultural Presentation that runs from 2-4 p.m. The second is a Film Screening at 6 p.m.

The Cultural Presentation, beginning at 2 p.m., has three components. First there will be a half hour talk on Arab culture in the U.S. The second will be a Debke dance demonstration. Attendees will not only get the chance to see the dance performed, but will also get the opportunity to dance themselves. Finally, there will be the opportunity to make an evil eye bracelet.

At 2 p.m., the film “Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People” will be screened. Released in 2006 and running 50 minutes, the film documents how the movie industry has negatively stereotyped Arabs and Arab culture from the time of silent movies to current blockbusters. After the film, educators from the Arab American National Museum will lead a discussion

This family friendly program, sponsored by the Arab American National Museum, is being run in conjunction with a travelling display that will be on the main level of the Library. There is no admission fee to attend. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
