Derrell Syria Project set to perform

L’ANSE — The good tunes and fun of the Derrell Syria Project will be featured in the free L’Anse Lakefront Concert Series at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Those attending the concert are encouraged to stick around for a good view of the fireworks across the bay.

Meadowbrook Arena is the site in case of inclement weather.

‘No Letting Go’ film event offered

MARQUETTE — First Presbyterian Church, in partnership with Pathways Eliminating Stigma Team will host a free community film event “No Letting Go” at 6 p.m. Sunday in the church’s sanctuary.

This is a powerful film presentation about mental illness and how it shapes the course of the lives of those who have a mental illness and the lives of family members.

A question and answer session with PEST members will follow.

U.P. Made Artist Market now open

COVINGTON — The Covington Community Women’s Group has opened the U.P. Made Artist Market on School Road for the season.

The community group is a recognized non-profit organization that supports artists and crafters from the Upper Peninsula as well as from other states.

Situated in the historic Covington School, the market offers a wide variety of gifts for the home or camp. Paintings, photography, woven rugs, baby and kitchen gifts, jewelry, twig art, soap, local jams, honey, and maple syrup. A recent addition is Ozark mountain wood-turned bowls and unique creations. All are displayed in two school rooms along with an area of vintage collectibles and books.

According to a press release from the group, there is plenty of parking and a beautiful shade spot for picnics with small playground and RV turn-around. Take Highway 41 or M-28 to Highway 141, turn south to next block. Turn at the big blue sign.

The volunteer group rents the school, which is owned and maintained by the Covington Township. New artists welcome. Vendor pictures on the web page: upmadeartistmarket.com. The market is open Thursday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Call 906-355-2727 for more information.

Books available at open house

ISHPEMING — The two Ishpeming history books by author Robert Dobson will be available at Wednesday’s Ishpeming High School Alumni Open House from 9 a.m. to noon. His table will be next to the Carnegie Friends of the Library in the High School Old Gym. Books will be autographed by Dobson, a 1958 graduate of IHS.

One-half of the proceeds will be donated to the Ishpeming Schools Alumni Association.

IHS Class of 1956 meets Wednesday

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming High School Class of 1956 will meet for a special buffet lunch at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at River Rock Banquet Center in the Country Village.

Spouses and friends are invited to join the class members in celebrating their 63rd reunion.
