‘New Growth’ exhibit to premiere

MARQUETTE –The Marquette Artist Collective Gallery Committee’s next show is titled “New Growth.” Spring is the perfect time to feature new growth of all types. The juried exhibit called for entries exploring new growth to celebrate the arrival of spring. It was open to artists from the community and in the Collective. Submissions in 2D and 3D.

Art will be on display at The Gallery, 130 W. Washington St., Marquette — the Masonic Square — with a reception from 6-8 p.m. June 1.

The Marquette Artist Collective is a diversely talented group of artists and creatives in Marquette. Regular gatherings are open to everyone and work to support creativity, the arts, and events in the amazing local arts community.

Memorial Day services in Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — Memorial Day services honoring comrades killed in action will be held starting at 10 a.m. Memorial Day, May 27, at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Various veterans groups and auxiliaries will be participating.

In case of rain, a service will take place at the Ishpeming VFW Post 4573, 310 Bank St.

Scramble golf tourney benefit set

MARQUETTE — Everyone is invited to join in supporting the the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight by enjoying some golf and win some fabulous prizes at the Highland Golf Course’s 4-person Scramble Golf Tournament on June 8.

May 31 is the sign-up deadline.

The Highland Honor Flight FUNdraiser will feature 18 holes of golf, donuts and coffee for breakfast, lunch, and a dinner buffet. Prizes will be awarded for each flight. There will also be skins, a silent auction, bucket raffles and more. The tournament will begin with a shot-gun start at 10 a.m. Golf cart rentals will be available for $30/cart. Women’s, men’s, senior and combined teams are all welcome, and the ladies and seniors tee boxes will be moved up to “level the playing field.” The Highland is located 7 miles west of Escanaba along U.S. 2.

Entries are limited to the first 36 foursomes. Registration forms are available at the clubhouse or can be found on the Highland website: go to www.highlandgolfclub.net and download the entry form from the “Event” tab. Registration forms and payments are due by May 31. The entry fee is $240 per team.

Non-golfers interested in supporting the U.P. Honor Flight, or business owners interested in donating a raffle prize or item for the silent auction should contact Kathy at 906-466-2791.

The mission of the U.P. Honor Flight is to fly Upper Peninsula World War II, Korean and Vietnam veterans to Washington DC to visit and reflect at their memorials; memorials that stand in their honor. This “Tour of Honor” is provided at no cost to the veterans. Funds generated from the scramble will go toward the fall Honor Flight on Sept.18.

Rummage, bake sale on June 1

MARQUETTE — Redeemer Lutheran Church will be having a rummage and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 1 at 1700 W. Fair Ave., Marquette.

The proceeds from the sales will be used towards missions in the upcoming months. There will be household items,collectibles, small furniture, recreational items, jewelry, tools, books and baked goods.

Redeemer will be sending a team to work with the Lakota Sioux on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota this summer at the end of July for a week. The weather this winter and spring caused a great deal of flood and storm damage to some of the homes and much repair work will be needed.

There are plans for community ministry where there will be activities involving the youth, Bible study, games and food.

In January 2020 there are plans for a team to go to Honduras to provide medical clinics in the rural mountain villages of the indigenous natives,the Tolupans.

New grant program announced

LANSING — The MichiganDepartment of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Water Resources Division is announcing a new grant program to aid in the control or eradication of aquatic invasive plants in Michigan’s inland lakes.

This year, approximately $100,000 will be available through the Aquatic Invasive Plant Control Grant for the reimbursement of permit fees required for projects to control or eradicate inland lake aquatic invasive plant species using physical, biological or chemical control activities that occur this year.

Details on grant eligibility are available on the Aquatic Invasive Plant Control Grant webpage located at Michigan.gov/Invasives under the “Grants” tab.

The grant handbook and application process are currently being developed. The handbook will contain detailed information on eligibility, instructions for applying for the grant and items to be included with the grant application. Grant applications will be accepted from June 1 through July 1. The handbook will be made available on the AIP Control Grant webpage on June 1.
