Lake Superior Zendo — Zazen (Zen Buddhist meditation) meets at 7:40 a.m., 8:30 a.m.; morning service at 9:10 a.m. Call 226-6407 for location and details.

Bird count — the Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society’s 71st annual Christmas Bird Count will take place. Participants will meet at 8 a.m. at Mattson Lower Harbor Park, Marquette, and groups will be formed to cover various regions of the count-area. There is no cost to take part in the count, and no pre-registration is necessary. The count will last until about noon, and participants are asked to dress warmly. Birders of all abilities are invited, and new participants will be paired with experienced counters. Participants may also count birds at their home feeders by pre-registering and requesting a tally sheet. The Marquette count circle covers a 7.5-mile radius centered on the old City Hall at Fourth and Washington. Tai chi — 9:30 a,.m. to noon, an introduction to the mind /body practice of Tai Chi Chuan will take place at the Hope Connection Center, 927 W. Fair Ave. in Marquette. Cost of the workshop is $27 and includes a light, healthy brunch along with a cup of green tea. Instructors will be Jon and Diana Magnuson. The workshop is sponsored by The Cedar Tree Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides services and initiates projects in the area of mental health, religion and the environment. Scrooge — Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre will introduce a few surprising twists to its longstanding holiday production of “Scrooge!,” a musical retelling of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Performances will be at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The one-act show is approximately 55 minutes long. Tickets are $15 for the public, $10 for students and $5 for NMU students. They are available online at tickets.nmu.edu or at any NMU EZ Ticket outlet. IHS basketball benefit — The Ishpeming VFW is hosting a brunch to benefit the Ishpeming boys basketball team. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW, 310 Bank St., Ishpeming. The price for brunch — which includes pancakes, eggs and bacon — is $7 for adults with children’s admission $5 and those under age 5 eating free. All proceeds go to the Ishpeming boys basketball program.

Holiday Brass Choir Concert — is planned at 4 p.m. A group of 10 local brass musicians will present an informal concert of Christmas carols inside at the Marquette Commons, 112 South Third St, Marquette. This event is is open to the public and free.

Community meal —  The monthly Community Dinner at Hope Free Lutheran Church in west Ishpeming will be at 5 p.m. The menu this month will feature homemade soups and chili with sandwiches. Open Drop-In Meditation Sit — 5:30-6:30 p.m. An opportunity for individuals with meditation practices to get together in a group setting for 30-minute silent meditation, brief sharing and short loving kindness meditation.
