Meditation class to meet Thursdays

MARQUETTE — The public is invited to join Jeremy Morelock for a weekly meditation class emphasizing mindfulness, loving-kindness and compassion.

The class meets Thursdays in January at 5:30 p.m. in the Shiras Room at the Peter White Public Library.

YMCA family event Dec. 29

NEGAUNEE — The YMCA of Marquette County is hosting an exciting family friendly event on Dec. 29 at its West End facility in Negaunee.

The public is invited to enjoy this free event with crafts, games, snacks, and even a countdown to the new year at noon.

Grace Lutheran meal coming up

GWINN — Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn will be serving its free monthly community meal from 5:30-6:15 p.m. Jan. 2.

Everyone is invited to this Table of Grace at which lasagna will be served.

The handicapped accessible church is located at 558 W. M-35 in Gwinn.

Takeouts will be available after 6 p.m.

UPAWS benefit planned

ISHPEMING — Sit, stay and laugh at the Raise the Woof Comedy Show Fundraiser to benefit the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter.

The event is Jan. 18 at River Rock Lanes and Banquet Center in Ishpeming. A pasty dinner is from 6:30-8:30 p.m., with the show planned from 8-10 p.m.

There will be a 50/50 drawing as well as a $5 raffle that gives access to the candy buffet plus an entry to win an awesome prize.

Raise the Woof is a group of comedians committed to raising money and spreading awareness for animal rescue, giving animals a voice through laughter and putting the “fun” in fundraising.

This year all tickets are general admission and seating is first come, first served at tables. Full parties of six-eight people can reserve a table after ticket purchase by emailing awetton@upaws.org.

Tickets include comedy, dinner, and cocktail service. Tickets will be on sale at www.eventbrite.com and also sold at UPAWS, 84 Snowfield Road, Negaunee Township, and Honor Credit Union, 490 U.S. 41, Negaunee.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at event entry. A limited number of tickets are available, tickets will only be available at entry if any remain unsold in advance.

This event is suggested for ages 16 and older.

PWPL to host mystery book club

MARQUETTE — Once Upon a Crime, the book group for mystery lovers, will meet in the Dandelion Cottage Room in the Peter White Public Library at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 to discuss “L.A. Confidential” by James Ellroy after reading the mystery and watching the DVD.

Set in 1950s Los Angeles, this intricate novel follows three lawmen in an era of police corruption, starting with a shootout involving gangsters and a rogue cop followed by a Christmas Day riot in which cops brutally beat imprisoned Mexican criminals. This is part of “The Book was Better?” theme for the year.
