Pop-up art sale to be held Thursday

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Artist Collective strives to support artists and the arts in the community.

Joy Bender Hadley was inspired around the time of the August 2017 solar eclipse to start the artist collective. Since then this dynamic group of visual artists have been growing, creating, and organizing. They currently have 15 Active Artist Members, with a growing number of Supporting Artist Members. Just this October alone, they curated three different exhibits and were in the planning stages of several others.

The Active Artist Members recently voted to open an art gallery at 130 W. Washington St., the former home to the Oasis Gallery. It will be known as The Gallery: A Marquette Artist Collective Project.

The Marquette Artist Collective will hold a pop-up art sale in this space during the downtown Ladies Night, on Thursday. The Marquette Artist Collective will then work to have the space ready for holiday sales. Followed by the exhibit “The First Real Show” which will run from Jan. 15 to Feb. 26.

Once Upon a Crime set to meet

MARQUETTE — Once Upon a Crime, the book group for mystery lovers, will meet in the Dandelion Cottage Room in the Peter White Public Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday to discuss “The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett after reading the mystery and watching “The Maltese Falcon” on DVD.

A treasure worth killing for. Sam Spade, a slightly shopworn private eye with his own solitary code of ethics. A perfumed grafter named Joel Cairo, a fat man name Gutman, and Brigid O’Shaughnessy, a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. These are the ingredients of Hammett’s iconic, influential, and beloved noir mystery. This is part of “The Book was Better?” theme for the year.

New members are welcome. For more information, call 228-9953.

Tasty Reads will meet Tuesday

MARQUETTE — Tasty Reads, a book group for readers who like to cook, will focus on “L’Appart: The Delights and Disasters of Making My Paris Home” by David Lebovitz at its noon Tuesday meeting in the Peter White Public Library’s Shiras Room on the upper level.

A former San Franciscan, chef David Lebovitz moves to Paris to develop recipes and write a cookbook. After renting for some time, he decides it is time to purchase his own place. Without the aid of a multiple listing service or realtor, he must figure out which places are for sale and then navigate the different and complicated French rules for purchase and renovation. Fortunately for David, he has his partner Romain and his cooking to keep him sane.

Share thoughts about the book and a recipe inspired by it. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
