Banned Books Week coming up

MARQUETTE — From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the Peter White Public Library will have a tent set up in the AV room on the main level of the library to promote awareness of Banned Books Week.

Learn about the history of banned books week and browse books that have been either banned or challenged over the years.

Clay class offered at Erickson

CURTIS — A clay class with Tina Doorn in which participants will make unique ceramic mugs is being offered through the Erickson Center for the Arts, Curtis.

The class will be on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 7 from 1-4 p.m. both days.

Easily master the basics of hand building with clay with artist Tina Doorn. Various techniques for making functional mugs including altering and texturing extruded cylinders, attaching a bottom and making a handle will be explored as well as glazing techniques using high fired stoneware glazes.

Students will create one or two of their own uniquely designed mugs that they can take home and use for drinking their favorite beverage.

The class is open to adults who are interested in working with clay. No prior experience in clay is necessary.

Both class sessions will be held at Tina Doorn Pottery Studio, W17929 Long Point Road, Curtis. The cost is $60 per person. All materials and firings included in cost.

Instructor Tina Doorn is a potter in Curtis who owns her own working pottery studio and gallery located on Long Point Road. She has been working with clay for more than 20 years. Her work can be seen at the Erickson Center Gallery, Lake Effect Gallery in Manistique and UP Scale Art in Munising.
