Newsletter prep volunteers needed

ISHPEMING — Volunteers are needed for the mail preparation of the Ishpeming HIgh School Alumni Association newsletter, The Beacon Light, at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Volunteers are asked to report to the IHS library. Use the Division Street entrance as all others will be locked.

Work will consist of labeling approximately 6,000 pieces of mail.

Knitting guild meeting at Big Boy

MARQUETTE — The UP North Knitting Guild will hold its end of the year party from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Big Boy along U.S. 41 West, Marquette.

Members will be ordering dinner off the menu and it is pay as you go. Dessert will be provided.

There will be a short information meeting. There might be a game and members hould bring any show and tell and knitting as this is a fun night to visit with area knitters.

There is two-month break then the group will start up again on Sept. 20 at a location to be announced.

NAMI support group to gather

MARQUETTE — The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette offers free, confidential support groups and educational meetings for individuals living with mental illness, and friends or families living with an individual with mental illness.

A support group will gather at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Baraga Place Conference Room, 129 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette.

Tai Chi Chuan workshop planned

MARQUETTE — A introductory workshop to Tai Chi Chuan will be at 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Hope Connection Center, 927 W. Fair Ave., Marquette.

Weather permitting, a portion of the workshop will be held at the Presque Isle Park Pavilion.

Tai Chi is a mind/body practice that involves gentle movements to improve balance, regulate blood pressure, and reduce stress. Its origins were developed by Buddhist monks in the 8th century.

There is no cost for the event. The workshop is a summer gift from the Cedar Tree Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides services and initiates projects in the areas of mental health, religion and the environment.

L’Anse lakefront concerts continue

L’ANSE — The fascinating “Old-Timey” string music of All Strings Considered will be featured at the L’Anse Lakefront Concerts at 7 p.m. June 28 in Lakefront Park at the foot of Broad Street.

This event is free. Meadowbrook Arena is the inclement weather site.

City band to perform in Art Week

MARQUETTE — The public is invited to join the Marquette City Band at 7:30 p.m. June 28 at Marquette Commons as they participate in Marquette Art Week.

The band’s musical program, “All-American Music,” is featuring Jacob Bender, guest conductor, and Mark Flaherty, trumpet.

Sponsored by the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, the city of Marquette presents Art Week June 24-30. Admission is free to the public, but donations are greatly appreciated.

The band’s upcoming schedule includes two concerts at the Presque Isle Bandshell, at 7:30 p.m. July 12 and July 26, as well as the annual Fourth of July Concert at Mattson Lower Harbor Park at 6:30 p.m. July 4.
