Alzheimer’s walk kick off on tap

MARQUETTE — The Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Michigan Chapter will host its kick off for the 2018 Marquette Walk to End Alzheimer’s from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at The Vierling Restaurant and Marquette Harbor Brewery, located at 119 S. Front St., Marquette.

Appetizers will be provided along with a cash bar.

While the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Marquette does not take place until Sept. 8, the fundraiser takes months of preparation.

Beyond the fundraising, this event helps educate participating communities about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. More than 600 communities nationwide participate in Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which is the world’s single largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This year the goal for the Marquette Walk is to raise $55,000.

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in Michigan and has increased 96 percent since 2000. In 2017, more than 180,000 Michiganders were living with the disease and more than one-half million local residents are serving as caretakers.

There are 12 walks planned throughout Michigan in 2018. The Marquette Walk takes place Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Jacobetti Complex on the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
