Program on U.P. English planned

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library invites the public to attend a talk entitled, “UP English, Eh?” by Dr. Wil Rankinen, Assistant Professor, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Grand Valley State University, part of the 2018 Summer Linguistic Lecture Series.

The talk will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25 in the Library’s Shiras Room and repeated at 6 p.m.

Have you ever wondered why Yoopers sound Canadian to many outsiders? Where in the Upper Peninsula is “sauna” pronounced the Finnish way and where is it not? What shared or differing beliefs do Yoopers hold about language, culture and community? How does where one lives in the U.P. influence those set of beliefs?

In this 60-minute presentation, Rankinen will address these points and more, following up on last summers presentation, “Yooperese.” After the presentation, there will be time for questions and a community discussion. Coffee, cookies, and cardamom bread will be available.

There is no admission charge to attend thanks to sponsorship by the Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan and the Peter White Public Library. Come out, eh, and enjoy the fun and fascinating topic of UP talk! For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
