‘Men in Black’ screening Thursday

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library Invites film fans to a free screening of the 1997 modern classic “Men in Black” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the library’s community room.

Agent K of the private agency Men in Black, is looking for a new partner. He chooses NYPD officer James, and together they work to protect the Earth as well as other planets by preventing the Bug race from getting “The Galaxy.” Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith and Linda Fiorentino, this comedic adventure is rated PG-13 and runs 1 hour 38 minutes.

Hometown Art Gala Opening set

MUNISING — The art department of the Munising Public Schools invites the public to the Hometown Art Gala Opening from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Munising Public Library.

Students whose art will be featured are Jersey Lassila, Ray Schierschmidt, Nolan Dolaskie, Bailey Tyner, Brody McNally, Cleo Witty, Jacob Mattson, Lucas Westcomb, Sophia Rolfe, Carly Lindquist, Madeleine Peramaki, Nicole Belanger and Alex Johnson.

Axiom Brass Quintet to perform

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University music department will host a concert featuring the Axiom Brass Quintet at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Reynolds Recital Hall. The event is part of the Siril Endowment for Musical Arts.

The Axiom Brass Quintet is an internationally recognized group that features trumpets, tuba, trombone and French horn. Its musical repertoire ranges from jazz and Latin music to string quartet transcriptions. The award-winning group is the only Brass Quintet to win the Chamber Music Yellow Springs competition and the only American group to win the Preis der Europa-Stadt Passau in Germany.

Since its founding, the Axiom Brass Quintet has remained committed to educating and inspiring young audiences. This blend of virtuosic performance and dynamic teaching earned the ensemble the Fischoff Educator Award in 2011. The group will be visiting NMU for a week-long residency. Members will lead classes and lectures for students.

The concert is free for NMU students, $15 for adults and $8 for other students. Tickets are available for purchase at tickets.nmu.edu.

Relay for Life set for Friday at NMU

MARQUETTE — Relay for Life at Northern Michigan University starts at 3 p.m. Friday at Vandament Arena in the Physical Education and Instructional Facility of NMU and ends at 3 a.m.

Everyone is invited to come help the community of Marquette honor its members who have fought and are fighting their battle with cancer as the students raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Beekeeping presentation Saturday

MARQUETTE — The U.P. Master Gardener Association presents: “Backyard Beekeeping for the Preservation of Pollinatorsfor Local Gardens and Orchards.”

Jim Hayward is a retired dentist who first became a beekeeper as a teenager. He moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1977.

After developing gardens and a small orchard, he became concerned with the local die off of wild pollinators in 1992. He decided to try beekeeping to provide a local supply of pollinators and over the past 25 years has successfully met the challenges of beekeeping.

The event is from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday at Peter White Public Library’s Shiras Room on the second floor.

This free event — space is limited so an RSVP would be appreciated. Refreshments and door prizes will be part of the day.

The Gathered Earth, 131 W. Washington St., has donated handcrafted Bee Bella lip balm to the first 10 people to RSVP. Bee Bella donates a portion of the profit to honeybee research.
