‘Kindred’ discussed at Sci-Fi on Tap

MARQUETTE — At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Peter White Public Library will be hosting a meeting of its book club, Sci-Fi on Tap, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company.

This month, the group will discuss “Kindred” by Octavia Butler. Butler, the first prominent black female science fiction writer, decided to become a writer when she was 9-years old. After watching the film “Devil Girl from Mars” she thought that she could write a better story. In Kindred, the protagonist, Dana, is a contemporary black feminist and writer. On her 26th birthday, she is transported back to a Maryland plantation just in time to save the owner from drowning. While she returns to the present, she is drawn back to the past multiple times, threatening her future.

The meeting will be in the Tap Room, so look for a PWPL Sci-Fi on Tap sign. Come to the club, enjoy a beer, and express thoughts on this novel. There is no admission charge to attend.

For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
