Senior acting troupe to perform

NEGAUNEE — The Great Pretenders, the Negaunee Senior Citizen Center Acting Troupe, will perform at noon Wednesday.

The 15-minute play “The Speeding Ticket” is a comedy that will feature Olivia Sleeman, Virginia Paulson, and Scott Collins, all Negaunee residents.

The description of the play by the ArtAge Senior Resource Center is as follows: “We have all broken into a cold sweat when we have seen the blue flashing lights of a law enforcement officer in our rear view mirror. But not Starlight Moon. She may be old, but she knows how to talk her way out of a speeding ticket. She may have to tell a view untruths along the way, but they are all good for a laugh or two as she works the arresting officer into a frenzy, and then reverts back to the sweet old lady she really is. Or is she? It is up for the audience to decide who Starlight Moon really is as she rides off into the sunset and the arresting officer considers early retirement.”

The play is under the direction of Pauline Lakanen.

There is no admission charge for the production. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., which is open to the public. Tickets go on sale at 11 a.m., and homemade chicken pot pie will be served.

Negaunee band concert on tap

NEGAUNEE — This week’s Negaunee City Band concert will be directed by guest conductor, Andrew LaJoie.

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.

LaJoie has chosen several marches, including “The Dam Busters,” “General Lee March” and Sousa’s “The Invincible Eagle.” The evening’s overture is “Black Tower,” while our country’s heritage is celebrated with Irving Berlin’s “Songs for America.” Popular music is represented in “Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes” and “Billy Joel in Concert.”

Hospice holding memorial service

NEGAUNEE — Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice will hold its 2017 Summer Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carp River Gardens in Negaunee.

The service is open to anyone in the community who has lost a loved one and would like to honor and celebrate that person’s memory. Gathering with others who have suffered a similar loss offers healing, encouragement, and a reminder that no one is alone in bearing grief.

The garden provides a beautiful setting for peaceful reflection, according to a press release from LSLCH, as well as an opportunity to participate in a meaningful event that includes music, prayer, and a bell-ringing ceremony with the lighting of candles. A reception will follow the service with light refreshments and sweet treats.

All are welcome to attend. RSVP to 225-7760 if you plan to attend and would like to light a candle for your loved one as his/her name is read.

Carp River Gardens are at 73 Heritage Drive, Negaunee.
