Esky library hosts food preparation series

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Public Library is hosting a Fall Food Preservation Series with MSU Extension.

It is important to stay up to date on the latest research for safe home food preservation including approved methods, recipes and processing times, as they are reviewed and updated. Michigan State University Extension’s Food Safety Educator, Stephanie Ostrenga Sprague, will present current recommendations for safe home preservation techniques.

This four-part series will begin on Thursday, Oct. 13 with Basic Food Preservation: Learn the basics of food preservation with a focus on the blanching and freezing method.

It will be followed by, Thursday, Oct. 27, Water Bath Canning: Learn a popular and approved method for preserving high acid foods like fruits, jams, jellies, pickles and salsas.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, Pressure Canning and Dehydrating: With opening day of deer season a few days away, learn how to safely preserve your harvest and Thursday, Dec. 8, Food Gifts: Learn how to make safe food gifts to share with friends and family during the holiday season.

All programs are on Thursdays and start at 4:30 p.m. No registration is required. The public is welcome.

The presenter, Stephanie Ostrenga Sprague, MPH, EP-C is a supervising and food safety educator for the Western and Central Upper Peninsula for the Michigan State University Extension program.

She has presented numerous MSU Extension programs at the library including programs on health.
