All about TOWN

With Mary Jayne

This, although being a current picture of a new Gallery Coffee Co. sign being put on this building, it has many old time memories for me. Actually from the 1940s when underneath this window was no doubt the Rexall Drug Store, down a bit was, I believe, the A&P grocery store. Then Lilias Brandt had an appliance store, then Denman’s Department Store, and so on. And above all these were one or two bedroom apartments. This was, say, 1945 or so when a friend and I were intrigued by this corner window of the building (and it still is interesting) as the view as I remember it was fantastic. At the time, a couple named Clarence and Hattie (Bovan) Freed lived there with a couple of daughters. We got to go for a visit and a view and although it has changed somewhat, it must still be great. Of course, this was before any stop light in town so that would not be there and also the Cowell Building was next door so that is gone. Otherwise, Wielands was on another corner, the bank building and Hoffman building on the other side. What a great view. And keep in mind, those were the after-war years so those apartments were always full. Little did I know that not too many years later, I would be living across the street in an apartment over the Candy Kitchen and thus looking over at this building in the photo. Memories, memories! It appears that Munising has another new business on wheels, so to speak, as this is electronic bicycles for rent. This is located on the 300 block of East Onota Street. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
Although it may seem far off, I thought it a good idea to post this sign I found on my venture to the west end recently. Oh my! (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
