HOUGHTON — Three candidates will vie for an open Houghton City Council position in the May 3 election.

Robyn Johnson, Mike Salmi and Craig Waddell filed for the council seat, which has been vacant since Dan Salo left the council last year.

All three candidates were among the eight who applied when the council sought to appoint a replacement in November. Salmi did not advance to a vote. In different configurations, the council deadlocked 3-3 on Johnson and Waddell.

Johnson works at Michigan Technological University as a business systems and data analyst in the provost’s office. Her experience with community groups included serving as past director for the Copper Country Ski Tigers and Keweenaw Co-op, for which she also serves on the policy committee.

Salmi works as a certified registered nurse anesthetist at UP Health System — Portage. An 11-year U.S. Army veteran, he has also volunteered in roles such as a ski patroller at Mont Ripley and a coach for soccer and baseball.

Waddell is a retired professor of rhetoric at Michigan Tech. He has been a frequent attendee of city meetings, including making frequent suggestions to the city on changes to rules of procedure, which he has said would increase public oversight. He also founded the West Houghton Neighborhood Association, which had meetings for five years attended by the mayor and city manager.
