COVID clinic for MTU students to proceed

HOUGHTON — A COVID-19 vaccine clinic restricted to Michigan Technological University students next week will go on as scheduled, the organizer said Thursday.

The three-day clinic, put on by Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL), had originally been slated to use the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, prior to the federal pause this week after cases of rare and severe blood clots — six out of about 7 million vaccines given.

Instead, the clinic will use the Moderna vaccine, said Michaela McKeen, outreach and communications manager for UGL. As it is a two-dose clinic, UGL will offer a second dose 28 days later.

The clinic is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at the Student Development Complex Varsity Gym.

As of Thursday, it was unknown how many students would be participating, McKeen said.

Despite the quick turnaround time, McKeen said UGL is expecting a sufficient supply of vaccine for the clinic.

As of Friday, Tech’s 14-day total of detected COVID-19 cases is 29, up from eight a week ago, MTU said in a weekly update.

The positive test rate for surveillance testing is 1.9%. As of Friday, 10% of the university’s isolation space is filled.

A mass vaccination clinic put on by the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department also went on as scheduled Thursday at Tech. Like the upcoming UGL clinic, it substituted Moderna for Johnson & Johnson.

WUPHD will hold another clinic for the public on March 29. Those interested can sign up at wupdhd.org/ covid-vaccination-clinics.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Brian Cadwell at bjcadwel@mtu. edu. Volunteers will be able to receive vaccinations.

As of Thursday, the percentage of residents in the five-county area with at least one dose of COVID vaccine had cracked 40%. For those over 49, it was 58.3%.

Infection rates increased locally. Houghton County had a seven-day average of 184.6 cases per million as of Thursday, up from 153.2 the week before. Percent positivity was also higher, rising from 7.5% to 11.4%.
