Car hits road commission employee

BESSEMER — A Gogebic County Road Commission employee was injured as the result of an accident Thursday morning.

Donald Grbavcich, 52, was struck by a vehicle driven by Floyd Erickson, 84, around 11:10 a.m. in the city of Bessemer, according to a Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office release.

Grbavcich was standing on the roadway filling potholes when he was struck, officials said. He attempted to jump out of the way after being warned by a coworker, but was unable to get completely out of the path of the vehicle.

“Mr. Grbavcich had on his reflective vest and his vehicle had all the necessary flashing lights on,” the release states.

He was transported to Aspirus Grand View Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Erickson told police that he did not see Grbavcich or the utility vehicle stopped in the road until “it was too late,” the release states. He was issued citations for careless driving and moving violation causing injury in a work zone.
