UPHS-Bell welcomes Atkinson

Dr. Andrew Atkinson

ISHPEMING — UP Health System-Bell recently welcomed obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Andrew Atkinson to the UPHS-Bell Women’s Health staff.

Atkinson earned his bachelor’s of science at the University of Detroit-Mercy before completing medical school at the Saba University School of Medicine. He finished his OB/GYN residency at Rutgers University/Jersey Shore University Medical Center, according to a press release from the hospital.

“We are excited to have Dr. Atkinson join our women’s health team,” Mitch Leckelt, CEO of UP Health System-Bell, said in the release. “He has extensive experience and will provide the residents of the Central Upper Peninsula with access to our premier women’s health services.”

As a native Michigander, Atkinson has fond memories of the Upper Peninsula. Now, with a family of his own, he looks forward to having similar enjoyable experiences with his kids.

“I was born and raised in lower Michigan,” Atkinson said. “I spent a lot of time in the U.P. growing up, and it’s a place that I have never forgotten. Since medical school, I’ve been away from Michigan, and now that I have a family of my own, I want my kids to have the same experiences that I did.”

Recently, Atkinson was an OB/GYN attending physician at the Soyah Health/Danville Regional Medical Center, prior to working as an attending physician at the Patrick County Prison. He also worked as a Registered Nurse at Sinai Grace Hospital/Detroit Receiving at Wayne State University.

“All of my patients are very important to me, and no one is treated differently,” Atkinson said. “Helping someone who is struggling is the most compelling role as a medical provider, as well as bringing new life into this world and building long-term trust and friendships with my patients and surrounding community.”

Atkinson earned Excellence in Surgery recognition from The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He also received an award of Excellence for Pelvic Reconstruction Surgery, took first place in the Resident Research Day at Rutgers University and earned the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Award.
