Prep for races includes blanketing West Washington Street in snow, annual bib draw banquet

U.P. 200 Judge Brenda Ransom, hands musher Denis Tremblay from St. Michel-des-Saints, Quebec (center) his sled banner at the annual bib draw and musher banquet on Thursday as master of ceremonies Walt Lindala (upper right) looks on. Tremblay received bib number 1, which means he will be the first out of the chute on West Washington Street in Marquette at 7 tonight. Thirteen mushers will participate in the 27th annual U.P. 200, which covers approximately 230 miles from Marquette to Grand Marais, with a return to Marquette along the same trail. The terrain includes stretches of near-wilderness, creek crossings, hills and valleys, and heavily forested land. The race, using twelve dog teams, is a qualifier for the annual 1,050 mile Iditarod Dog Sled Race in Alaska. (Journal photo by Lisa Bowers)
