NMU student dies in dorm room

Anthony Herbert

MARQUETTE — A 20-year-old Northern Michigan University student who is a member of the NMU Wildcats football team died suddenly in his dormitory room this morning, university officials confirmed.

Anthony Herbert, a sophomore in the construction management program from downstate Lapeer, died in the 8 o’clock hour in his room at Spaulding Hall, according to university spokesman Derek Hall.

The death followed an early morning workout and breakfast, Hall said. The cause of death is unclear.

In a message to students and university personnel, NMU President Fritz Erickson said NMU is “providing counseling services to those impacted who need help to deal with this loss. We will be talking with Anthony’s family on their wishes regarding memorial/funeral services and will keep the campus informed as those details become available.”

The Mining Journal will bring readers a more complete story as soon as additional details are available.
